How to Signal Human Creativity in Your Projects

A guide on showcasing human craftsmanship and intention alongside AI tools, and how badges can build trust.

As Generative AI becomes integrated into every tool we use—from IDEs to design software—defining what is "human-made" has become more nuanced. It is no longer just about whether you used a tool, but how much of yourself you put into the final output.

How can creators signal their dedication, hand-crafted details, or thoughtful curation in a world where everything looks polished? Here are four practical ways to showcase human creativity in the age of AI.

1. Document the Creative Decisions

AI tools excel at generating options, but they lack taste and context. The human element in any project is the act of selection and curation.

To highlight this:

  • Write about the "Why": Explain why you chose a specific design option or why you refactored a piece of code.
  • Show the iterations: Share early sketches, wireframes, or pseudo-code. Highlighting the evolution of a project shows the deliberate choices that AI cannot make for you.

2. Highlight Imperfections and "Hand-Crafted" Elements

In design and music, perfection can sometimes feel sterile. AI outputs are often mathematically perfect but lack soul.

  • If you are writing code, document the custom workarounds or architectural decisions designed for human maintainers.
  • If you are designing, preserve the subtle, deliberate irregularities that give a brand personality.
  • If you are writing, use your unique voice, humor, and personal anecdotes. These are patterns that LLMs can mimic but never truly experience.

3. Use Transparency Badges

One of the easiest ways to establish trust is to explicitly state the level of human and AI involvement. The Made by Human badge collection offers four distinct options to mark your work:

  • Made by Human: Use this as a general badge celebrating human creativity when you made the core creative decisions.
  • Co-created with AI: Use this when you worked side-by-side with AI tools to brainstorm, draft, or translate parts of the project.
  • Crafted by Human: Use this when you built the project entirely by hand, with zero AI assistance, honoring pure human craftsmanship.
  • Human in the Loop: Use this when AI generated the baseline content, but you heavily edited, verified, and curated the final output to ensure quality.

By placing these badges in your GitHub README or site footer, you make your process transparent in under 30 seconds.

4. Share the Curation and Coder Journey

People connect with people, not algorithms. Building in public is one of the most effective ways to signal human involvement.

  • Talk about the bugs that took you three hours to solve.
  • Discuss the features you decided not to build.
  • Explain the user research and human empathy that guided your product decisions.

Trust is the New Currency

As synthetic content becomes cheaper and more abundant, human attention will naturally gravitate toward sources they can trust. Signaling your creative process isn't just about ethics; it is about building a distinct, authentic brand.

By being open about how you build, you invite your audience into the creative studio—showing them that behind the screen, there is still a human at work.
